Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Struggling students, in Grades 5 - 8, often fail to achieve basic literacy levels. This is problematic as basic literacy is essential to successful participation and contribution to our society and social life. A powerful learning environment is crucial to providing quality education. Research falls short in providing knowledge of effective teaching principles for designing PLEs for students who are struggling. Therefore, using a best-fit framework synthesis, this systematic literature review analysed 36 effectiveness studies in order to identify effective teaching principles. A framework emerged from the unravelling of the interventions: “Teaching Principles for Powerful Education for struggling Students” (ToPPERS). ToPPERS contains the principles that have been shown to maximize the learning for struggling students in Grades 5 to 8.
