Examining Attrition and Mental Health in Educator Preparation Programs at Independent Colleges/Universities During COVID-19

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 105A

Abstract

This study explores the factors that contribute to teacher candidate attrition (prior to program completion) and the strategies educator preparation programs (EPPs) employ to address attrition at 31 independent colleges and universities in North Carolina, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. We employed a mixed-methods design, using a survey of EPP deans at North Carolina Independent Colleges and University member institutions, and a structured dialogue with member schools. Results suggested that candidate attrition is attributed to challenges with passing Praxis/ gateway tests, mental health related issues, and anticipated low teacher pay. This study suggests the need to examine the usefulness of candidate testing and the need to address mental health related issues to address attrition among teacher candidates.
