Teaching-Focused Faculty in Research-Intensive Universities: Balancing the Dual Missions of R1 Institutions

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Research-intensive universities have the dual objectives of conducting cutting-edge research and preparing their students to become future leaders in their fields. Balancing these aims can be challenging, but through hiring teaching-focused faculty we may be able to bridge the gap and promote inclusivity in STEM education. We surveyed STEM UC Teaching Professors to understand their roles, training, achievements, and perceptions of departmental influence, among other topics. These results highlight the downstream effects of such activities and underscore the importance of supporting research efforts. We argue that this emphasis may help to align the research and teaching missions.
