Exploring Students’ Preferences for Online vs. Face-to-Face Courses: Underlying Reasons and Learner Differences

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 405

Abstract

Building upon a previous study exploring students’ preferred modality (online, face-to-face) and whether online self-efficacy and self-regulation skills varied by preference, we surveyed undergraduates (n = 407) enrolled in educational psychology courses during the Spring 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters. Results showed that students’ preferred modality are in flux, as is their efficacy and self-regulation for online learning. Collectively, these findings offer suggestions for how we might address declining overall college enrollment trends while helping students effectively pursue online options.
