Promoting Fairness and Social Justice of AI Use in Education: Challenges and Stakeholders’ Responsibilities

Abstract

Despite growing research on artificial intelligence (AI) teaching and learning, limited reviews have examined ethical or responsible AI in education, especially related to fairness and social justice of AI use. To fill this gap, we conducted a systematic review to analyze key themes on fair AI. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we collected 15 empirical articles from Scopus and Web of Science that satisfied our inclusion criteria. Our findings revealed key challenges and stakeholders’ responsibilities in promoting fairness and social justice in deploying AI in K-20 educational contexts. This study provided suggestions on how to create equitable learning opportunities in AI systems via the collaborative efforts of stakeholders.
