A Scoping Review of Technology-Related Bootcamps

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 115A

Abstract

Technology-related bootcamps are a non-traditional instructional format that may quickly and affordably train students for rewarding occupations and help fill anticipated job gaps. While media outlets and bootcamp providers consistently report favorable student outcomes, the scope and coverage of research in this quickly developing area remains unclear. This paper presents initial findings from a scoping review of 18 studies published between 2012 and 2022. A comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed across eight databases. Results provide an overview of research on technology-related bootcamps and three key themes: (1) how bootcamps impact marginalized groups, (2) barriers impacting success and (3) the lack of emphasis learning and job outcomes. Implications for theory, future research, and practice are discussed.
