“Math Doesn’t Scare Me. I Scare Math.” Student Voice in Mathematics Classrooms

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Our presentation examines student discourse surrounding mathematics learning experiences to better understand the challenges that shape diverse learners’ lived realities in school. We analyzed quantitative data from a newly-developed survey as well as transcripts from accompanying cognitive interviews. We focus on understanding how students make sense of their mathematics identity in relation to their peers and teachers. This presentation seeks to contribute to the present discourse in mathematics education research that examines how students’ mathematics experiences shape their identities.
