How We Teach SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) Matters: Considering the Pedagogies of SEL Framework to Improve SEL

The field of social and emotional learning (SEL) has largely been focused on the content of SEL, with limited attention given to the many ways to teach SEL content. This paper addresses this gap and presents the Pedagogies of SEL Framework—a framework of teacher behaviors or pedagogies that, when used strategically, should scaffold students in developing declarative, procedural, and conditional SEL knowledge effectively. We consider the pedagogies of modeling, practice promotion, transfer promotion, elaboration, and validation, and how use of these pedagogies might better support marginalized students.
