Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The expectations regarding students' transition and postsecondary experience will influence students´ level of satisfaction, academic success, and their decision to persist and graduate. The existing literature shows that the knowledge students have about higher education tends to vary according to the socioeconomic level of the families and the school. This research investigates the information students from the vocational track have and their expectations regarding higher education. More than 60% of the students in the vocational track belong to the lowest two income quintiles. Our results show that students want to pursue higher education both in technical institutions and in universities; they are interested in programs that show high economic return, but they do not necessarily know what those are.
