Young people are experts on their own experiences in the K12 education system and have invaluable perspectives on how we can build better schools that serve all students, families, and communities. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is building a youth-engagement structure where young people across the state partner with DPI staff, researchers from University of Wisconsin-Madison, and community organizations in issue definition, research and data use, and crafting policy and programming solutions. In this process, youth are taught how to use statewide data systems to build their understanding of issues that matter to them and to propose possible paths forward. In this session we will summarize our process and provide examples of projects.
