Research with Black LGBTQ2SIA+ youth in Canada remains nascent in scope lacking insight into Black gender expansive youth (GEY) experiences. The current study explores Black GEY school experiences. Qualitative interviews were conducted with four Black GEY. Preliminary themes suggest Black GEY (1) are pressured to conform to societal gender norms imposed upon them (2) blend in to avoid conflicts, (3) view access to gender affirming supports as essential tools, and (4) view learning support staff (i.e., teachers) as inadequately equipped to effectively engage in discussions pertaining to their lived experiences. Findings highlight the ongoing need for research, policies, and interventions aimed at fostering safe and inclusive environments for Black GEY, ensuring their holistic well-being, academic, behavioral and psychological success.
