Virtual students empowered by artificial intelligence have seen increasing adoption in simulation-based learning, offering personalized support for teacher preparation. As an emerging topic, pre-service teachers’ experiences and perceptions of AI-empowered training in simulated environments have rarely been examined. This study involved ten preservice teachers participating in AI-based teacher training, followed by a semi-structured interview to gather their perceptions and experiences in the training. The findings revealed that preservice teachers generally exhibited positive attitudes towards using AI-based simulation for teacher training. The training afforded opportunities for preservice teachers to practice decomposed teaching skills. Implications for future research were discussed.
