Abstract

The intent of this systematic literature review is to investigate the perspectives of disabled cis-gender female, transgender, and non-binary individuals on the topic of disability masking. Articles that met the following criteria are included in the analysis: (1) original qualitative or mixed-methods research studies, (2) peer-reviewed, (3) published in English, and (4) used first person narratives of target population as the primary data source for analysis. The field of special education needs to understand the phenomenon of disability masking, particularly how it is often a gendered practice for disabled students who experience both ableism and misogyny/transphobia, in order to provide the best education possible to this population of students.
Keywords: masking/camouflaging, females, transgender and non-binary, disabled students
