Artificial Intelligence (AI) has contributed to building a heightened agency in the empowerment and autonomy of learners since the 1960s. With the introduction of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), connections to educational paradigms are emerging. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how these connections can enhance and empower learning for future growth and adaptability. Through bibliometric analysis, the study examines the current and historical research on GenAI in Education and AI's potential in nurturing 21st-century skills. This review uncovers five trends of GenAI in education through a comprehensive examination. The analysis also determined ten applications where GenAI can be used in education and categorized into the AI paradigms of AI Directed Learning, AI Supported Learning, and AI Empowered Learning.
