Abstract

Although the growth of online learning is evident, access per se does not mean that all learners regardless of their cultural background will receive the same learning opportunities. This review synthesized research published between 2016 and 2023 that examined cultural inclusion in online learning. A systematic method involving searching, coding, and analysis was used. Key findings include, (1) theories of education, culture, critical theory, and social justice have been used to inform research, (2) cultural inclusion in online learning can be fostered through authentic assessments, culturally responsive online discussions, cloud-based collaborations, videoconferencing strategies, and virtual experiential learning. This study underscores the significance of culturally sensitive approaches to enhance diverse learners’ motivation, engagement, and learning.
