Getting the GIST (Geographic Information Science and Technology): Centering Intersectionality in a Blended Learning Program for Autistic Students

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study highlights the application of blended learning and self-regulated learning research in the Connecting Students with Autism to Geographic Information Science & Technology (CSA-GIST) study, an NSF-funded project. The impact on autistic high school students’ learning motivation and interest in STEM majors and careers is investigated. Traditionally, autism research consists of white male students and white neurotypical researchers. Our research team is committed to inclusive and representative research. As such, the methods for centering educational equity employed, including different approaches to research team selection and the recruitment process for participants, is also explored.
