Within the domain of chess, the present study investigated the negative influence of racial stereotypes on participants who are not the target of the stereotype. Participants had to evaluate moves from chess positions that were either played by a Black or a White chess player. It was assumed that if participants are biased by racial stereotypes, they will evaluate the moves played by Black chess players less positively than similar moves played by White players. Moreover, the accuracy of their evaluation will be worse for White players than for Black players. Findings are largely in line with our predictions and showed that the detrimental influence of a racial stereotype on performance affects anybody who holds this stereotype.
