Beyond the Diagnosis: A Systematic Review of Racial Disparities in Autism Services

Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 2

Abstract

This systematic review explores racial disparities in the provision of services for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a complex process influenced by socioeconomic factors, caregiver awareness, and cultural responsiveness. The review identifies significant pre-diagnosis, diagnostic, and post-diagnosis disparities, particularly disadvantaging caregivers from minoritized racial backgrounds, leading to delayed diagnoses, unequal access to healthcare and education services, and culturally insensitive treatments. Through a comprehensive analysis, the review emphasizes the need for culturally responsive ASD services, the critical role of professional training in ensuring equitable care, and the importance of inclusive policies to overcome systemic biases. It provides a vital contribution to understanding racial disparities in ASD services, informing future research and intervention strategies for more equitable provision of care.
