“Wow! This Is So Cool”: A Case Study on Using Augmented Reality in Learning Spanish

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 411

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) enables users to see or interact with virtual objects overlapped in real-world environments. This study examined the effectiveness of three AR experiments in a beginner-level Spanish course and students’ learning experiences. Each of the experiments lasted 10 to 15 minutes. Data included pre-and-post scores, classroom observations, and interviews. Every student had higher post-test scores, suggesting AR was positively related to students’ learning. However, it is essential to note that students were engaged in other learning activities during the experiments. The qualitative research data showed that: (a) AR made learning more exciting and interesting; (b) AR improved the interactions between students and students; and (c) AR prompted the students, from technology users to potential technology designers.
