Parental Involvement and Mathematics Motivation: Interplay Between Parents' Beliefs, Attitudes, and Practices (Poster 10)

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Research shows that parental involvement in schooling benefits students' adjustment at school. In this study, we analyze the relationships between various aspects of parental involvement (i.e., beliefs, attitudes towards math and practices), students' motivation and mathematics achievement.
Participants were 8071 3rd and 4th graders from six European countries and their parents. Students completed the Expectancy-Value Scale, self-reporting on motivational aspects of mathematics, and performed two math tests. Parents reported their mathematics-related attitudes, mindset, and involvement practices with their children.
Analysis conducted using Structural Equation Modelling allowed us to identify the detrimental effects of fixed mindsets on parents' practices and detect practices associated in specific ways with students' motivation and academic achievement.
