Painful Truths, Radical Humility, and Researcher Vulnerability: Writing on Racism Within Cross-Racial Research Teams

Thu, April 11, 10:50am to 12:20pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Utilizing Critical Race Duoethnography we explore the experiences of a cross-racial research team investigating racism. We illuminate the meaning making that takes place within cross-racial research relationships to discover how the cross-racial relationship impacted the research products. A critical analysis reveals that cross-racial research groups can engage in humility and shared “researcher vulnerability,” which relies on excavating and accepting the existence of racialized pain, trusting each other to process that pain, and enacting research that authentically seeks healing. Results point to a re-envisioning of research on anti-Black racism that encourages blurring lines between researcher positionality and researched subjects to dismantle the all-encompassing nature of racism–not just in our work but in our profession, person, and practice.
