Promoting In-Service Teacher Self-Efficacy Through Artificial Intelligence Professional Development

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 307

Abstract

The increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) has unearthed the need to upskill teachers with the capacity for integrating AI into existing coursework at all levels. Several initiatives aimed at K-12 teachers and practitioners have emerged to guide educators in using best practices for the integration of AI concepts, knowledge, and skills. This multi-method study investigates how middle school teachers’ self-efficacy evolved during their participation in a year-long professional development. During the PD teachers are tasked with integrating AI into their science classrooms, using fossil shark teeth to engage their students. The findings suggest that the PD assists with teacher self-efficacy development over time, as they implement AI concepts in their classrooms.
