A Practical Framework for Culturally Relevant Leadership Developed Through Self-Study Research

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

As culturally relevant educators and leaders, we believe teachers can become leaders regardless of their positionality in a school. Using self-study teacher research during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, we examined our leadership identity through the lens of culturally relevant pedagogy. To do this, we asked: “How did we become culturally relevant leaders?.” Using this question, we explored our leadership identity and developed a practical framework for culturally relevant leadership. Exploring our identity and developing a practical framework, our research revealed two findings: (1) “The Importance of Developing Culturally Relevant Leaders” and “Peer-to-Peer Leadership Development.” Using our framework and findings, we aim to create responsive learning environments in our school communities as culturally relevant teachers and leaders.
