The Process of Access: Conducting Inclusive Qualitative Research With Disabled Participants (Poster 34)

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This qualitative research project discusses the experiences of two early career researchers while they were pursuing inclusive dissertation research with disabled participants. Coding was done with personal vignettes, based on reflexive memos and journaling throughout their dissertation processes. Findings illustrated the many levels of complexities within access and research, especially for researchers completing a dissertation. Some findings to be discussed include the intentional choices researchers made while designing and conducting their research, the dichotomy of desired versus actual fieldsite, and the intricacies of the process of gaining, navigating, and maintaining access to an inclusive fieldsite and participants. The implications of this work are significant in addressing the ableist nature of research, especially for doctoral students and early career researchers.
