The Power of Educators in Community: Walking the Path to Equity in Early Childhood Education

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 109A

Abstract

The concept of recognizing teachers as potential researchers and inviting them to actively engage in the research process has left a mark on the way I view myself as an educator. The acknowledgment of the work we do as early childhood educators is appreciated. This realization has fueled my unwavering commitment to work towards reshaping equity in early childhood education.

I continue to be a part of this transformative group for the professional growth it offers, where educators from diverse backgrounds unite with a shared passion for equity in early childhood education. I believe in the immense power of community(Copper, 1990). Together, we can harness our collective strength to bring about meaningful change in the lives of the children we serve. We are not just passive recipients of knowledge but active contributors with a wealth of insights into the intricate art of teaching and learning. I believe it is our collective responsibility to bridge the gap between research and practice, this can be done only if we are invited to the table to actively engage in the research. Our power lies in recognizing the influence we hold and the role we play in education.

My hope is that we continue to look within ourselves, interrogate our biases, and confront the uncomfortable truths that may be within us (Goswami, & Stillman, 1987). By doing so, we can emerge stronger, more compassionate, and better equipped to dismantle the barriers that perpetuate inequality in early childhood education. Each of us possesses the ability to be the change we hope to see—not just in ourselves but with those we are in community with.
As I reflect on this powerful journey, I am reminded of the immense responsibility that rests upon our shoulders. We are more than educators; we can be researchers of a new era in education—one that empowers, uplifts, and transforms the lives of our children, regardless of their background. My hope is that we as teachers will share our knowledge, our passion, and our collective strength to pave the path to equity in education . The power is within us, and the time for change is now (Johnson & Johnson, 1989).
