This study investigates successes and challenges in implementing the Tennessee SySTEM for College and Career Readiness Project (TN SySTEM), an innovative approach to improving the quality of STEM education and broadening STEM participation by integrating work-based learning into early post-secondary opportunities (EPSOs). Using a combination of site visits, interviews, and focus groups, we explored how TN SySTEM implementation varied across schools and factors promoted or inhibited successful implementation. Findings revealed that participating schools (k=4) used innovative strategies to implement work-based STEM EPSOs with varying topics, formats, and work-based learning experiences. Key challenges arose as schools navigated workplace regulations, transportation issues, coordination with post-secondary institutions and employers, and recruitment of underrepresented students.
