Of Teachers and Centaurs: Exploring the Intra-Actions of Educators + Artificial Intelligence

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon J

Abstract

Recent advancements in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) brought with it both hype and fear of the ways in which such automation technologies would replace human labor in various fields, including education. Rather than focusing on the replacement of humans in teaching, this piece uses new materialist (Barad, 2007) thought to consider how new posthuman subjectivities (Braidotti, 2023) might offer a different orientation toward AI technologies as tools that possess potentiality for difference and new becomings in teaching. Using multiple case study approach (Stake, 2006), this empirical study looks at two English language arts (ELA) teachers who have adopted “centaur” teaching practices, entangling humans and AI in order to approach planning and instruction differently and with greater speed and stamina.
