A Call for the Development of a Fluid Online Glossary of Terms for the Arts-Based Education Research Community (Poster 5)

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Arts-based research (ABR) is a continuously expanding methodological family within and beyond the education research community. Despite the growing presence of arts-based educational research (ABER), “…there is still debate about whether ABR is its own paradigm or a genre of qualitative research” (Leavy, 2018, p. 575). I argue that ABR has been sufficiently conceptualized within and beyond education research for researchers to rely more heavily on terms already in the literature to signal the research domain, (e.g. quantitative, humanities-oriented, etc.), of a study. This is a call to create a fluid digital glossary of terms to help researchers, graduate students, and those outside of the ABER community better understand the ever-evolving terrain of ABR methodologies available to education research.
