Abstract

Faculty members play a pivotal role in promoting democracy within higher education institutions through their civically engaged practices. Our study explored the roles of higher education institutions in promoting faculty’s civically engaged practices in their teaching, advising, and other areas of their work. We specifically examined faculty perceptions of their institution’s civic engagement climate and institutional characteristics in relation to faculty’s emphasizing informed citizenship and prompting action for social change. Using 13,531 faculty responses from 65 participating institutions collected from nearly a decade (2014-2022) of the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE), we found that institutional civic engagement climate is strongly related to faculty’s civically engaged practices. Based on this finding, we discuss practical and research implications.
