Abstract

This paper describes the first few years of collaborative journey and an initial analysis of the first three years of data from a collective partnership to address the lack of access to quality arts education experiences for students from underserved populations. The partnership between a university research team, local school district, and community arts center with funding from a Department of Education Assistance for Arts Education grant, was created to provide opportunities to elevate young learners to explore their culture and validate students’ expression of their personal cultural identity. To accomplish this, the team is focusing on three distinct constituencies: teachers, students, and the community to expand arts-based educational programming in schools on the south side of San Antonio, Texas.
