This study analyzes the mission statements of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Utilizing critical race theory and Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth, the mission statements of HBCUS provides the foundation for exploring ideas and creating programming and policies that benefit students, faculty, staff, and the local communities (Cook, 2023). Analyzing HBCU mission statements and their contribution to postsecondary education and society is essential. Four major themes from this study highlight how HBCUs, as sites of resistance and love, support personal and scholarly development for students, faculty, and staff. Findings from this study suggest that HBCUs are uniquely positioned to respond to heightened societal tensions and to see their students, faculty, and staff as more holistic contributors to society.
