Education for sustainable development (ESD) serves as a promising approach amidst the current global sustainability crisis. Universities, as the strategic heart — indeed the head — of education, have the critical responsibility to make graduates competent, both as skilled professionals and as responsible citizens. Still, their rigid, disciplinary divides deny students an opportunity of meaningful cross-disciplinary dialogue and participation required to advance sustainable development. In this paper, I present a framework to design student-led, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) clubs that help university students develop sustainability competencies required to achieve SDGs. This review paper provides valuable insights for universities, and other educational stakeholders, seeking to design ESD-aligned interventions for improving sustainable development as well achieving SDGs.
