Sexual Assault in College and Universities: Who Is Forgotten?

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The highest rates of sexual assault in the United States surround two distinct yet converging populations: people with intellectual disability and people in higher education spaces. Given the relatively recent increase in inclusive programs designed to open the door for students with ID to attend college, research must respond to the decrease in divisions for the abovementioned populations. Through a literature analysis with methods akin to that of Chang and Viesca (2022), researchers sought to understand if and how current sexual assault research acknowledges these experiences of individuals with intellectual disability. Findings illustrate that there has been minimal work done connecting sexual assault and ID. Implications are made to reduce this inequity through future research and practice.
