This study aims to investigate how a newly-arrived Pakistani mother engaged in literacy practices that are instrumental to her child’s reading gain at an after-school literacy program in Southwest Michigan. A qualitative method was employed for this study, and data were collected and analyzed through face-to-face semi-structured interviews with one participant. Thematic findings from data analysis indicated that reading gains are possible when parents serve as a motivational instrument as they engage with their children.
