Sex Differences in Postsecondary Education and Employment Pathways After High School

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

For the past 50 years, females have been enrolling in college at higher rates than males. For students choosing to attend a postsecondary institution, there are sex differences in the type of institution in which they enroll and enrollment status. The current study extends previous research in this area, analyzing a large, longitudinal dataset (N=57,525) that merged information and measures collected by multiple state-wide agencies. We explored educational and workforce outcomes using an intersectional approach (i.e., sex, SES, and race/ethnicity). Our findings examining who is going to college, the types of institutions they are enrolling in, and enrollment status are consistent with prior research. Findings are largely consistent across race/ethnicity and SES.
