There is an increasing interest in how we learn collaboratively in online learning communities. The shared metacognition construct was designed to examine learners’ self-regulation and co-regulation within the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. This study addressed the validation of the Shared Metacognition Questionnaire and the fit for the shared metacognition construct as part of the CoI. A confirmatory factor analysis (n=348) resulted in moderate to high factor loading for all items and high Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients for self-regulation (.94) and co-regulation (.92) factors. Moreover, both factors showed significant correlations with all three CoI presences. In conclusion, this study supported the Share Metacognition Questionnaire as a valid instrument and showed that the metacognition construct fits with the CoI framework.
