Abstract

Analysis of discussion posts is essential for educators to understand and intervene in online learning activities (de Lima et al., 2019). Visualizations are essential tools for facilitating forum message analysis as they can provide pedagogical insights and visual patterns (Gibbs et al., 2006). This paper provides an overview of existing literature in the Web of Science (WoS) on the topic of visualization for analyzing online discussions. Thirty-one articles were reviewed. We present (1) the current state and developments on using visualizations to analyze online discussions based on Web of Science, and (2) affordances based on the literature for using visualizations: improving social interactions, modeling knowledge construction, and understanding learners' sentiments.
