This paper presents qualitative findings from a mixed methods study that used an explanatory sequential design. Focus group interviews with students (n=20) enrolled in one state’s EC teacher preparation programs highlighted the interdependence of the early childhood (EC) preparation and EC education and care systems. The well-being, compensation, and qualifications of the EC workforce influenced postsecondary students’ EC teacher preparation experiences and interest in working in ECEC settings. Findings identify specific challenges that should be further investigated and addressed to ensure preparation programs are able to meet the learning needs of the current and prospective EC workforce while strengthening EC preparation and EC education and care systems.
