Examining Data Culture and Access in Catholic Schools

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Catholic schools have a long-standing mission to provide students with faith formation and an excellent academic education. Catholic schools do not face the same accountability regulations as public schools but still have an obligation to ensure they are fulfilling their mission. In this descriptive study, we analyze survey (n=566) and interview (n=23) data from Catholic K-8 school principals to better understand Catholic schools’ progress in developing school-level data cultures. Principals report academic data use as a priority, but norms and routines around data use are in the early stages of development and are subject to limited human and financial resources. In closing, we discuss implications for improving data culture and access in Catholic and religious schools.
