We conducted a participatory, design-based research project focused on a mobile augmented reality (MAR) learning experience which features digital photography to support observation. The experiences of 29 rural families (46 parents/legal guardians, 48 children) at a nature center were documented by screen-recordings, GoPro cameras, and pre- and post-experience interviews. We asked: What is the role of digital photo-taking and recording keeping as families observe scientific phenomena related to native plants and pollinators in their communities? A framework on observation in the biological sciences was used to qualitatively analyze three vignettes. Our analysis showed that digital photography can be integrated into apps to support youths to move from noticing to observing when given repeated opportunities for participation in science practices.
