Creating Inclusive Spaces That Build Empowerment for Adolescents Through Curriculum Design and Students as Teachers

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The implementation of student voice in school curriculum serves as a means for youth empowerment and cultural awareness. In recognizing the importance of student-led education, educators must envision sharing the pedagogical load and include students in creating curriculums that honor both their input and their interests. A high school administrator and certified school counselor examine curriculums from three student-led elective courses at a public high school in Brooklyn, NY, aimed at creating curricular spaces for youth of color to have the tools to aspire and advocate for curricula they deem important to their lives. Providing opportunities for student voice and leadership affirms their varied experiences and the perspectives connected to their cultural backgrounds as essential assets and resources for learning.
