The purpose of this research was to study how studying and integrating literary theory impacted ELA teachers’ ability to design socially just literature instruction. The data revealed that teachers needed support languaging the work of literary theory and understanding how to structure inquiry in classroom instruction using the methods theories modeled. This study offers insights into how adaptation theory helped teachers and teacher candidates’ language and design possibilities for socially just literature instruction that centered inquiry, particularly with the young adult novel Salvage the Bones.
