Perceived Usability Evaluation of Virtual Reality Laboratories for Biomedical Engineering Education

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

A clearer understanding of a system's usability from the learners’ perspective could guide instructional designers and educators in the effective design, development, and selection of Virtual Reality (VR) laboratories for classroom instruction. This mixed-method study evaluates the usability of a VR lab integrated into undergraduate biomedical engineering education from a learner’s perspective using the System Usability Scale (SUS). An open-ended question was added to the SUS to gather qualitative responses on factors influencing learners’ usability ratings of the VR lab. In this study, we report learners’ usability ratings using traditional grades and use themes from the open-ended question to enhance our understanding of factors that influenced perceptions of the VR lab for improved student engagement and outcomes.
