Afro-Modernity as a Decolonial Device: Origin, Meaning, and Applicability to Processes of Resistance Against Late Agro-Coloniality in Africa

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The concept of Afro-modernity is deeply rooted in the profound thinking of Afro-American authors.

This article traces the historical and social foundations of Afro-modernity as discussed by Hanchard, Gooding-Williams, and Gilroy, and examines how these notions of resistance and resilience intersect within the African context. The work of Paul Gilroy proves particularly insightful, bridging the experiences of Africans and Afro-Americans and highlighting the universality of the Afro-modern paradigm.
