Dismantling Racial Injustice by Preparing Culturally Relevant Educators Using the Pennsylvania CRSE (Culturally Relevant Sustaining Educator) Competencies

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) mandated that all PK-12 schools and teacher preparation programs implement Culturally Relevant Sustaining Educator (CRSE) competencies in April 2022. A university located in south central Pennsylvania’s College of Education faculty have been working this past year to provide professional learning and networking opportunities to both university faculty and local PK-12 school partners. This work has taken many forms - a survey was sent to all undergraduate and graduate education majors; researchers analyzed data to see how well or ill-prepared participants thought they were regarding CRSE in their preparation programs; and workshops and program assessments were conducted to make sure that all pre-service teachers are exposed to and assessed on these CRSE competencies.
