This mixed methods study examined the prevalence rates of mixed methods research (MMR) studies in the flagship journals of four education subdisciplines from 2011 to 2022. The subdisciplines were Leadership, Learning Sciences, Curriculum and Learning, and Adult Learning. Using the Journal of Mixed Methods Research checklist, we assessed 93 articles that were identified as MMR studies within these flagship journals to ascertain their methodological rigor and transparency of applying MMR. Results reveal a significant growth in the prevalence of MMR studies within the four subdisciplines and highlight areas where MMR articles fall short of the checklist criteria. To enhance the checklist’s effectiveness, we propose recommendations for greater flexibility, collaboration, and inclusivity, offering insights to improve MMR studies in educational research.
