Abstract

Do you know faculty who have experienced targeted harassment? “If this hasn’t happened to someone on your campus yet, chances are it will,” predicted Inside Higher Ed in 2017. Since that time, the targeted harassment has increased exponentially, and what was once a prediction now seems like the norm. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an initial model for understanding how targeted harassment is experienced by faculty. To do so, I draw on data from interviews with faculty members who experienced targeted harassment such as a flood of cyberbullying on social media or email, direct messages and letters, phone calls and voicemails at work or home, in-person acts of intimidation, and threats of violence, rape or death.
