First-Year Compass Courses (FYCC) positively impact academic outcomes (e.g., retention, persistence) but less is known about well-being outcomes (e.g., belonging, self-regulation), despite stress being a top reason for students, especially for Black, Hispanic and male students, considering stopping their studies (Gallup 2023 Report). Feeling belonging impacts college engagement and graduation, especially for first-generation students and minoritized populations (Murphy et al., 2020). This mixed methods study examines FYCC student outcomes (thriving, self-regulation, GPA, retention). During Fall 2023, FYCC are opt-in, conditional, and required in two separate colleges (61 sections). Students are surveyed 3 times and answer a written prompt. As an intervention that encourages graduation and student connection, FYCC may have a conditional effect on historically under(served) students.
