This multiple case study explored how instructional designers use data to make decisions during the instructional design process. Participants included full-time instructional designers (n=5) who are involved in one or more phases of the instructional design process. Data sources included pre-interview surveys and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed by employing a general analytical strategy for developing a case description (Yin, 2018). The results showed that (a) instructional designers use data in a variety of ways, depending on the context and scope of the project and (b) the decision of which data sources to use is influenced by the scope of the project, the availability of resources, and the instructional designer’s own preferences. Implications for practice and research are discussed.
