The Educational and Economic Effects of Upward Bound Participation for Low-Income, First-Generation Students (Poster 25)

Abstract

Upward Bound(UB) is a federal initiative that supports low-income, first-generation, and racial/ethnic minority populations that desire higher education but need additional assistance. However, little is known about the correlation between UB participation and persistence towards bachelor’s degrees, nor with student success after college. Since educational attainment is a primary driver of upward economic and social mobility, it is crucial to see the long-term effects of UB degree attainment and entrance in the labor market. Findings show that there is a primarily positive correlation between UB participation and its desired educational and economic outcomes. This data provides insight about how disparities in higher education attainment for low-income, first-generation students can be alleviated with programs designed to help access.
